Zeta L. (Wagner) Haas, 94, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, in the Iowa Senior Life Center, Des Moines. She lived a long and fulfilling life that touched many others' lives. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Westover Funeral Home, Des Moines, with burial to follow at 2 p.m. in the Armah Cemetery near North English.

Zeta was born Nov. 8, 1912, to Oswald and Lucinda (Hurd) Wagner. Zeta did various jobs at her grandpa's country store from candling eggs by hand to flipping the long distance telephone switch by hand. Zeta was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic Academic High School for girls. She was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 47 years from the Great Depression in 1930 serving in many capacities until her retirement in 1977.

Zeta was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, St. Pius X Rosary Society, the
Telephone Pioneers and the Red Rock Club. She has been a volunteer through the telephone Pioneers working on the Talking Book Machines Repair for the blind for 35 years.

She had also been a volunteer at the Planned Parenthood Book Sale, the Special Olympics and Hug-A-Bear project for the Des Moines Police Department. Zeta was recognized for her long-term efforts as one of the recipients of the Governor's Award for Volunteerism in October 2004. In addition to volunteering she was an avid canasta player and enjoyed working crossword puzzles and flowers. Zeta also enjoyed spending time with her many special friends including Alene and Rick Gates, Dan Pontow and Tad Mellecker.

Zeta now joins her husband, Edwin F. Haas; her parents, Oswald and Lucinda (Hurd) Wagner; and her sisters, Mildred Wagner, Maxine Prall and Veronica Nordman, in eternal rest.

Zeta is survived by her niece, Karen (Burton) Martin of Kapuua, Hawaii; her great-niece, Sarah Lindsay (Richard) Pomate of Panama City, Fla.; her sister-in-law, Myra Taylor of Nevada City, Calif.; and multiple cousins. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and relatives.
