Cedar Rapids Herbert Christian Skarbek, 83, of 5225 Beverly Rd. SW, died of heart failure Saturday, July 7, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, John XXIII Catholic Church, by the Rev. Phil Thompson. Burial: St. Patrick Cemetery, Fairfax, with military services by American Legion Pekomy Post 572. A vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. today at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today. Friends may also call at the church after 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Catherine (Bernice); four sons, Robert (JoAnn) of Denver, Colo., Michael (partner Linda Hughes) of Twentynine Palms, Calif., Herb (Diana) of Spring, Texas, and Raymond (fiancee Judy Robinson) of Houston, Texas; five daughters, Catherine Skarbek of North Liberty, Cynthia (Bill) Siarny of Charlotte, Mich., Christine Skarbek of Macon, Ga., Karen (Gary) Rieck of Marion and Elizabeth Skarbek of Cedar Rapids; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marietta Hopkins of Spring Grove, Ill., Beatrice Haras of Plano, Texas, and Cecelia (Mike) Ryan of Chicago; and a daughter-in-law, Dolores Skarbek of Westminster, Colo.
An infant brother, Raymond, and a granddaughter, Monica Siarny, preceded Herbert in death.
Herbert was born Dec. 25, 1923, in Chicago, the son of Roman and Adeline Szatkowski Skarbek. He married Catherine B. Dermody on May 19, 1945, in Parnell. He was a former employee of Midwest Manufacturing in Galesburg, Ill., and Amana Refrigeration. He retired in 1989 from the Air-Condition and Refrigeration Institute in Roslyn, Va., as a standards engineer in the air-condition and refrigeration design industry. Herbert was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers and American Legion Pekomy Post 527. He served as a naval aviator on the U.S.S. Cabot during World War II.
