Robert Burdette Jack was born the son of George and Naomi Grier Jack near Deep River, Iowa on February 13, 1924. He received his education at the Guernsey High School and graduated with the class of 1941.
Burdette served his country during World War II in the Army 10th Mountain Division in Italy. He received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry award. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Burdette was united in marriage to Clara Martens on June 6, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Victor. To this union four children were born. The couple farmed in the Guernsey and Victor area and also owned and operated Jack Insurance Agency in Victor for 38 years. He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church, a 62 year member of the Victor American Legion and the Victor Lions Club, where he was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship, a former chairman of the Iowa County Veterans Commission, and recently was awarded with the Val Likens state award for meritorious service to Iowa’s Veterans and their families. He served on various committees including the Iowa County FHA for 4 years and the board of directors at Farmers Mutual Insurance of Iowa, an affiliate of IMT Insurance. He helped complete a book with nine other fellow veterans before his passing titled, “A Full Measure,” written by Norman Rudi, which described his time and experiences during World War II. Burdette was a man who cared deeply about his religion, his family, his country, and his community. He fought many battles throughout his life, always putting service before self. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and many business associates.
Burdette is survived by his wife of 58 years, Clara Jack of Victor; his sons, Mervin (Linda) Jack of Victor, and Myron (Rhonda) Jack of Victor; his daughter, Mary (Kurt) Gillette of Springville, Iowa; his grandchildren, Sherry & Mike Reifenstahl of Dysart, Iowa, Neal and Cara Jack of Ladora, Iowa, David and Derek Jack of Victor, and Nichole Jack of Springville, Iowa; his great grandchildren, Kayla and Hailey Jack of Ladora, and Ryan Reifenstahl of Dysart; his brother, Stan (Sherry) Jack of Gold Canyon, Arizona; and his son-in-law, Joe (Sharon) Schott of Hartwick, Iowa. Burdette was 83 years of age and was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Marilyn Schott; his son in infancy; and his brothers, Melvin and Lowell Jack.
Memorials may be directed to the Burdette Jack Memorial Fund to later benefit a local scholarship in his name.
