Nell Shima, age 82 of Marengo, died Friday, May 18, 2007 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Monday, May 21, 2007, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Friends may call from 3 to 7 P.M. Sunday, May 20, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo where there will be a Scripture Service at 6:00 P.M.

She is survived by her husband Edward F. Shima; her children, Mark E. Shima (Dr. Robin Boineau) of Washington, D.C., Ann Petrzelka (Art) of Amana, Lamar N. Shima (Pam) of Waynesboro, MS, Jean S. Shima of Williamsburg and Tom R. Shima of Brambleton, VA; six grandchildren, Joseph, Sara, Thomas, and John Petrzelka, Robert and Patrick Shima; and two brothers, Robert M. Neill and John A. Neill, both of Ellisville, MS. She was preceded in death by a son, Peter Brennan Shima, her parents, two brothers, Dr. Charles Neill and Dr. Walter Neill, a sister, Sue Boyd Neill Taylor.

Nell Burton Neill was born November 22, 1924 in Jackson, MS, the daughter of Charles Lamar and Susie Ridgway Neill. She graduated in 1943 from Ellisville High School, Ellisville, MS. She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in 1946 with degrees in Home Economics and Chemistry. Nell came to Iowa in 1946 to work for the Iowa State College Extension Service. She worked in four counties, including Benton County. She met Edward F. Shima and they were married February 14, 1953 in Jackson, MS. Besides being a homemaker and mother of six children, Nell assisted her husband in the farming operation. She was very involved in her community and was a member of many organizations. She served on the Iowa Valley School Board for over 20 years, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Iowa County Democratic Women, the Iowa County Democratic Central Committee, the National Farmers Organization and the Farm Bureau. Nell was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo and St. Patrick’s Altar and Rosary Society. She was active in two bridge clubs. She enjoyed sight seeing with Ed and occasionally traveled overseas.
