Parnell– C. Bernadette Long was born November 3, 1923 near Parnell, Iowa, the daughter of Daniel and Catherine (Weldon) McCarty. She graduated from Parnell High School and University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Bernadette was united in marriage to Edward Cecil Long on June 11, 1946 in Parnell. She taught rural school for 2 years, then became an elementary teacher, teaching Kindergarten, First and Fourth grades, at the Parnell Elementary School for 28 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell, Altar and Rosary Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and writing poetry. Bernadette has been a life long member of the Parnell community until becoming a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English five years ago. Bernadette died Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a extended illness at the age of 83 years. Bernadette is survived by her husband Cecil of Parnell; a daughter: Catherine ( David) Malloy of Williamsburg; two sons: Dennis (Pat) Long and Gregory (Laurie) Long all of Aurora, Illinois; six grandchildren: Jennifer Thatcher, Julie Sigg, Elizabeth Faestel, Ryan Malloy, Molly McWilliam and Justine Long; a great grandson: Jack Thatcher; a brother: James McCarty of Parnell and two sisters: Therese Weber of Washington and Marguerite Crane of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter: Cheryl Ann Long and a brother: Paul McCarty. The Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. Fr. Pat Lumsden will officiate. Burial will be at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 pm Monday. Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service are caring for the arrangements. Memorials are for Iowa City Hospice or Masses.
