John M. Flanagan

John M. Flanagan, a former well known Marengo business man, died at his home, 3826 Zuni St., Denver, Colorado, Saturday, February 25th, 1911, at 9 o'clock a. m.

While not unexpected, the death of John Flanagan brought a pang of genuine sorrow to all the older people of this city, who had known him so well in earlier days. He had a host of friends here who cherish his memeory with kindly regard, and whose sympathy is without limit for the bereaved wife and children, in their bitter sorrow. Mr. Flanagan was a clean hearted, clean spoken and clean living man. He was generous to a fault, honorable and reliable in every relation of life. Those who know him best, mourn him most, and the legacy of an upright character and good name is the richest dower he has left to his family.

John M. Flanagan was born in County Galway, Ireland, on Sept. 27th, 1837. At 16 years of age, attracted by the better opportunities offered in this land of the free, he immigrated to America, settling first at Davenport, then coming to Iowa county, settling on a farm in Pilot township, where he followed the avocation of a farmer for a number of years. He then moved to Marengo and engaged in business for some years. Then he removed with his family to Lohrville, Ia, where he lived for 18 years. It was here his health began to fail, and he retired from the farm and took up his residence in Denver, Col., remaining there until death called him to his eternal reward.

Mr. Flanagan was twice married. His first wife was Catharine Costello, and to their union were born six children. Two of these, Fergus J. of Denver, Col., and Mrs. Kate Dickerson of St. Louis, Mo, survive.

His second marriage, on April 28th, 1884 was with Miss Mary Weldon, of Millersburg. Five children were born to them, one son, John, dying in infancy. The surviving children of this marriage are: Louis, Margaret, James and Christina, all of the late home in Denver. He also leaves one brother, Fergus C. Flanagan, of Pilot township, and one grandchild, to mourn with the others, the loss of a loving relative.

The remains arrived here Monday morning, the family accompanying, and were taken to the home of Mrs. Nellie Moynihan on west Washington St., from whence the funeral occurred Wednesday, March 1st. Services were held in St. Patrick's church, Rev. Father Jackson, of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport, officiating. A large number of old friends and neighbors were present to pay a last tribute of respect in the memory of the deceased. Interment was in the family lot in Calvary cemetery.
