Bernice K. Hartzell 95, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa died September 7, 2006 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids from complications after a broken hip. Services: 11 AM Monday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Lori Wunder of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel after 10 AM on Monday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include her brother in law Gordon Hartzell of Cedar Rapids, a cousin Shirley Buswell of Marengo, Iowa, and close friends Jerry and Ruthie Trudo of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Beatrice, and her beloved husband of 64 years, Vaughn J. Hartzell.
Bernice was born November 18, 1910 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Minnie Wiese. She graduated from Marengo High School and attended Cedar Falls Teachers College. She was an elementary teacher in Sigourney until her marriage to Vaughn J. Hartzell June 1, 1941. In 1955, she and her husband moved to Marion, IA where he was associated with Farmers State Bank. In 1965 she and her husband purchased the Mechanicsville Trust and Savings Bank and Bernice served on the Board of Directors until they sold the bank in 1985 and retired to Cedar Rapids.
Bernice was a member of Chapter C. J. - T. T. T. and of Chapter KJ – P.E.O. She was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. She and her husband have given charitable contributions to St. Luke’s Hospital, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, The University of Iowa and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN., American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Iowa City and the CommunityHealth Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids.
Memorial contributions can be given to American Cancer Society (Hope Lodge in Iowa City) and the CommunityHealth Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids.
