Helen Marie Rathjen, 98, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, March 24, 2006, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo, after a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Eden United Church of Christ by the Rev. Glenn Hunt. Burial: 1 p.m. Monday at the Genoa Bluff Cemetery, Ladora. Friends may call at Turner West Funeral Home Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.Survivors include her son Ronald (Cindy) Rathjen of Cedar Rapids; a brother, David Jones of Williamsburg; a sister-in-law, Harriet Rathjen; nine grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; twin sons, Gary and Glen, a daughter, Darlene; and 2 grandchildren, Jennifer and David.Helen was born on October 25, 1907 in Millersburg to George and Grace Pope Fitzgerald. She married Carl Rathjen on December 4, 1928 in Waterloo. He died in 1992. She taught in the rural schools in Iowa County for 3 years, and then farmed there with her husband for over 28 years. She and Carl moved to Cedar Rapids where she worked for Killian’s Department Store and Sanford’s for the next 20 years. She was a member of Eden United Church of Christ where she was a Sunday School teacher, a member and officer of Women’s Fellowship and the quilting group. Memorials may be directed to the family. The family would like to especially thank the Rose Haven Nursing Home for the wonderful care they provided for Helen
