Obituary of Frank R. Smith
Frank R. Smith, a former Battle Creek resident, passed away Wednesday morning, October 30, 1940 in the Ancker Hospital at St. Paul, Minn. After an illness of two weeks following an emergency operation on October 14. Complications were the immediate causes of his death. His sister, Miss Birdie Smith of Sioux City, were called to his bedside and was with him during his last hours and accompanied the body to Battle Creek Friday. Funeral services for Mr. Smith were held at seven o’clock Thursday evening, October 31st in the Kessler and Maguire Funeral Home at St. Paul, with the Rev. Arthur Lee Odell of Mount Hope Presbyterian church in charge. He used the 23rd Psalm as the central theme of his comforting discourse. Frank Raymond Smith, son of George W. and Anna Branch Smith, was born May 6, 1887, on his father’s farm northeast of Battle Creek, and departed this life October 30th, 1940, at the age of 53 years, 5 months and 24 days. He grew to manhood in the parental home. After completing his education in the rural school near his home, he engaged in farming with his father for a number of years. During that time he attended the Battle Creek Methodist church. On October 31, 1916, he was united in marriage to Alta M. Hackley of Kankakee, Ill., who preceded him in death January 8, 1919. To this union two children were born Raymond James, who resides in Los Angeles, and George Hackley who died in infancy. For the past 15 years Mr. Smith has lived in St. Paul, where he has had employment. His parents and a sister, Edna, also precede him in death. Those left to mourn his departure are his son, Raymond, and a brother [crease in page, text missing] Los Angeles, his sister, Birdie Smith of Sioux City, his fiancée, Miss Phyllis Wagner of St. Paul, besides a nephew two nieces, other relatives and friends. Final services were held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2, 1940, in the Crane Funeral home in Battle Creek, with Rev. Arthur F. Rumbaugh officiating. The scripture used was the 23rd Psalm and the text was selected from Romans 12:1. The humns, “The Lord Is My Shepherd” and “Nearer My God to Thee” were sung by Mrs. Mary Hall, Mrs. J. J. Schmidt, Mr. Henning Schmidt and Mr. LeMoine Van Houten, who were accompanied by Miss Cassie Taylor. Interment was made in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Pall bearers were Messrs. Len Hare, Jed H. Campbell, L. A. Burow, A. F. Kopplin, Chas. Crane and Roy Jordan. Those from out of town attending were Mr. and Mrs. Herman Wallace of Ida Grove, Mrs. John Ellis of Ida Grove, Mrs. W. C.
