George Mason Cressey
(February 28, 1854 – August 6, 1946)Obituary
George Mason Cressey, born in Illinois February 28, 1854, passed away August 6, 1946 in Spokane, Washington, at the age of ninety-two years and six months. With his parents he moved from Illinois to Clinton County, Iowa and grew to manhood there. He was married to Josephine M. DeWitt November 12, 1875. To this union seven children were born, four of which are now living, Mrs. Mae Stewardson of Arthur, Mrs. Lillian Pease of North Hollywood, Calif., Mrs. Maude Benedict of Spokane, Wash., and Robert E. Cressey, of Spokane, Wash. He was preceded in death by his wife; three children, Venon Cressey, Frank Cressey, and Fay Cressey. Mr. and Mrs. Cressey lived in Clinton County six years. In the spring of 1881 they moved to a farm in Sac County. Retiring from farming in 1910, they moved to Arthur, where he was Postmaster for several years, until sickness forced him to retire. After the death of his wife, he made his home with his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Stewardson. He enjoyed many trips to the west coast to visit his children and families. He left Arthur ten weeks ago with his daughter, Mrs. Benedict to visit in Spokane. He was ill only one week, but his advanced age made it impossible for him to recover and he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, August 6, 1946 at the home of his daughter, Maude, who with his son, Robert, accompanied his remains home. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church with the Rev. W. C. Handy officiating. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Odebolt Cemetery, with graveside services conducted by the Masonic lodge of which he was a member over fifty years, being a Past Master of both the Odebolt and Arthur lodges. Among those who came from a distance for the funeral were Darrel Cressey of Davenport, Mrs. Roberta Cressey Boden of New York, Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Plautz, of Beresford, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. Arnodl Steintjes of Le Mars, Miss Lois Cressey of Muskegon, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Fredell of Sioux City, A. A. Aaronson and grandson of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. L. L.
