Howard Dresden Lorenzen
(June 21, 1905 – March 2, 1947)Obituary
Howard Dresden Lorenzen, son of Detler and Nettie Lorenzen, was born in Sac County June 21, 1905 and died at the Ida Grove hospital Sunday, March 2 at 4:45 p.m. He was 41 years, six months and 12 days of age. As a child of six years he moved with his parents to South Dakota and then to Montana where they remained until 1919 when they returned to Iowa and located in Silver Creek Township. Howard engaged in farming until 1932 when he came to Ida Grove and became engaged in electrical work. He entered in business for himself in the summer of 1943 establishing “Howard’s Electric Shop.” He did well and made many friends by his cherry smile and his honest dealings. He was united in marriage with Miss Hazel Vaught on May 23, 1935. Three children were born to them. They were Leslie James, who preceded his father in death in 1941 and Richard Lee and Audrey Kay. Mr. Lorenzen always took an active interest in community affairs. He was a member of the local Fire Company and on December 25, 1944 while acting in the line of duty he suffered a grave injury and never has been well since. In January 1946 he entered the hospital in Omaha for treatment. He seemed to gain some relief for a time but six months later found him again in the hospital, following which he sought help from every known source, but to no avail. Since last November, he has been cared for in the local hospital. Howard showed unusual courage and patience. For the sake of his family and his business and because of his own sake, he wanted to live and made a brave fight. However recent months saw him waiting for the coming of the day when he would be released from his long confinement. He was a good citizen, an efficient workman and an asset to the community. He is survived by his widow and two children, Richard and Kay, four sisters and five brothers. They are Mrs. Myrtle Bogenreif, Mrs. Edna Harris, Mrs. Dorothy Schimmer of Kingsley; Mrs. Florence Fanning, Annabel, Mo.; Theodore, Schaller; Roy, Portland, Ore.; Frank Newton; Delbert, Los Angeles and Clifford of Silver Creek. He also leaves a large number of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church, Wednesday, March 5 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Thos. B. Collins officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie McCamley sang, “In the Garden” and “Beyond the Sunset,” accompanied by Mrs. R. J. McNelly. Interment was in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were M. A. Piper, Elwood Hedrick, Arlo Forney, Ernest Jensen, James Stough and Donald Cameron. Source – Ida County Pioneer Record, Ida Grove, Iowa, Thursday, March 13, 1947, p.2
