Final Rites Held For Carl Backhaus
Funeral services for Carl Backhaus were held Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The choir and congregation sang two hymns. Rev. F. A. Wiese read the following obituary:
Carl Otto, son of Otto Backhaus and Anne Libler was born on April 12, 1886 in Morgan Township. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Grant Township by the Rev. Hermann. He was united in marriage to Clara Schumann January 4, 1911. This union was blessed with 6 children. The couple began farming in Grant Township and after four years moved on a farm west of Schleswig where they lived until moving to Schleswig in January 1942. In July 30, 1944, his wife, Clara, died. On March 14, 1945 Carl married again taking as life’s partner Meta Paulsen. Carl had not been feeling well the last few months, but his condition was not considered serious. He suffered a heart attack last Monday and was taken to the Denison Hospital. He died Wednesday February 8. He was preceded in death by an infant son, his first wife, Clara, and three brothers, Emil, Albert and Henry. He is survived by his wife, Meta, five children: Gertrude, wife of Hugo Ernest of Schleswig; Lucille, wife of Vern Kruse of Kiron; Fern, wife of Alvin Stier of Charter Oak; Otto of Schleswig; and Carl Jr., 62 Engineer Bn., Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The following brothers and sisters: Louise, wife of John Johannsen of Schleswig; William of Schleswig; Alfred of Ida Grove; Richard of Schleswig; Marie, wife of Herman Rusch of Mapleton; Dora, wife of Otto Wiebers of Schleswig; and Clara, wife of Frank Jensen of Schleswig; nine grand children and one great grandchild. Carl was always a faithful member of the Lutheran Church. At the time of his death he was a member in good standing and a voting member of the congregation. Burial was made in the Lutheran Cemetery at Grant Township. The following served as pallbearers: Harry Backhaus, Fred Backhaus, Edwin Backhaus, P. E. Johannsen, Burdell Jensen and Donald Wiebers.
