BATTLE CREEK – Services for L. Marlene Marth, 86, of Battle Creek will be at a later date. Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home in Battle Creek is in charge of arrangements.
Lois Marlene Marth was born July 2, 1934, to Louis and Edna (Toll) Koeppen in Charter Oak. She was baptized Aug. 19, 1934, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute by Pastor Weidmann and confirmed in March 1948 by Pastor Hugo Neiting. Marlene started school at St. Clair #7 (Monona County), then went to Sunny Side Country School and, in fifth grade, went to Lutheran school in Ute. She then attended Castana High School. On Dec. 28, 1950, she married Edward Marth. The couple was blessed with four children: Debra, Carol, Kenny and Michael. While helping her husband on the farm, Marlene had many part-time jobs, including waitressing, working as a CNA, at the flower shop and at a clothing store. In 1978, the couple had a farm sale and built a new home in Ricketts. Marlene then worked at Dubuque Packing Company and Ricketts Grocery. She was mayor of Ricketts for three years and served on the city council 10 years. In 2004, Marlene and Edward moved to an apartment in Battle Creek. She died Oct. 29, 2020, at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her father, Louis Koeppen; her mother and stepfather, Edna and Louie Kelm; a son-in-law, Douglas Krohnke; her mother-in-law and stepfather-in-law, Hedwig and Roy Naeve; two sisters: Marge Thiel and Shirley (Bill) Dunlap; two sisters-in-law: Betty (Wilbur) Kuhlman and Darlene (Everett) Peasley; and a brother-in-law, Alvin Naeve. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 69 years, Edward J. Marth of Battle Creek; and her children: Debra (Clark) Harm of Matthews, N.C., Carol Krohnke of Schleswig, and Kenneth (Marsha) Marth and Michael (Jill) Marth, all of Ricketts. Also surviving is a sister, Jan (Jimmy) Yockey; an aunt, Marie Miller; two brothers-in-law: Melvin (Eileen) Naeve and Harry Thiel; a sister-in-law, Charlene Naeve; nieces and nephews; extended family; and friends.
