(October 17, 1946 – November 29, 2020)

HOLSTEIN – Private family services for Larry E. Volkert, 74, of Holstein were held at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein with the Rev. Bob Lewis officiating and military rites by American Legion Dessel-Schmidt Post #225 at Holstein. Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home in Holstein was in charge of arrangements.
Larry Eugene Volkert was born Oct. 17, 1946, to Lawrence and Ina (Dreeszen) Volkert in Holstein. He was a lifelong resident of Battle Township in rural Holstein. Larry joined the National Guard in Ida Grove in 1966 and was a member of the 133rd Infantry. In May 1968, during the Vietnam War, he was activated to regular service and based in Colorado Springs, Colo., until August 1969. He was a member of the American Legion Dessel-Schmidt Post #225 of Holstein. Larry married Janet Heeney April 17, 1970. The couple was blessed with two children, Audra and Ashley. He was engaged in farming and feeding cattle with his brother, Lane. He loved conservation and incorporating that into his work. One of his favorite pastimes was taking tractor rides. Larry was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein. He enjoyed volunteering and being involved in community and church activities. He died Nov. 29, 2020, at MercyOne-Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ina Volkert, and his parents-in-law, Eugene and Ella Heeney. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet; and two daughters: Audra (Sean) O’Neill of Wall Lake and Ashley (Mitch) Trost of Holstein. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Breanne O’Neill, Griffin O’Neill, Clayton Trost and Maxwell Trost; two siblings: Lane (Lori) Volkert of Holstein and Larane (Larry) Campbell of Chino Valley, Ariz.; many nieces and nephews; extended family members and friends.
