Final Rites for Mrs. M. Smith; Services Held Sunday at Moore’s; Lived Here 67 Years
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Matilda Smith at Monroe Bros. Funeral Home Sunday at 2:00 o’clock with Rev. Wilbur Swen officiating. Raymond Wallace sang “Shadows” and “Nearer My God To Thee,” accompanied on the piano by his sister, LaDonna Wallace. She was laid to rest in Ida Grove Cemetery. The pall bearers were, Ray Yousling, Joe Garner, Mace Fleenor, James Nicol, Art Skolas and Joe Dessel.
Matilda Jane Shearer, daughter of Emily and Samuel Shearer, was born September 19, 1855 at Delville, Pa.. She was the eldest of children who survived infancy. She passed to her eternal rest Wednesday, February 28, after an illness of one week, having attained the age of 84 years, 5 months and 15 days.
Married In 1883
The rural schools of Perry County, Pa., provided what education she received. In her girlhood she united with the Evangelical Lutheran church and, after her marriage to William Smith on January 23, 1883, came west, first to Battle Creek and after a six month stay there, moved to Ida Grove. Here they joined together the Unitarian church. Ever after her marriage she has resided in and near Ida Grove. Her main interests were always centered in her home and family. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Emily, in 1886 and by her husband in 1926. Mr. Smith had been engaged in the milling business both in Battle Creek and Ida Grove for many years.
Surviving are two sons, Samuel Mervin of Yakima, Wash.; and W. Walter of Ida Grove, three daughters, Mrs. John Von Dohren, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Mrs. Leland Johnson, New Virginia; and Mrs. Blanche Hogan of Ida Grove, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Friends and relatives attending the funeral from out of town were, Mr. and Mrs. S. Mervin Smith, Yakima, Wash.; Mr. and Mrs. Leland S. Johnson, New Virginia, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Ferry, Kirkman; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Morgan, Harlan; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Ellis and family, Mapleton.
