Theo. C. Abbe Dies Saturday; Had Been Resident of Ida County 62 Years; Funeral Held Tuesday
Theodore C. Abbe, resident of Ida County for sixty-two years was called to his eternal home at an early hour Saturday morning, Feb. 3. Theodore Christoph Abbe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Abbe was born Sept 26, 1857, at Tinley Park, Cook County, Ill. He was baptized in his infancy and renewed his baptismal vow with his Lord at the age of 17, when he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Tinley Park. He came to Grant Township in 1878, where he farmed until 1913. When Mr. and Mrs. Abbe moved to their new home on the corner of Fourth and Main streets. They have made this their residence ever since.
Married In 1884
On February 24, 1854 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Stange. This union was blessed with four children, three sons and one daughter. One of these sons, Theodore, passed away in infancy and another, Henry, died at the age of 18. Mrs. Abbe passed away August 24, 1896. On December 1, 1898 he married Miss Mary Honz, who survives him. The church life of Mr. Abbe was an active one. He gave evidence of his Christianity by his regularity in attending divine services, by his contributions, and by his unwavering trust in the Lord during his illness. He was active as a voting member in Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township, and also in the local Lutheran church since his transfer here.
Ill A Year
Mr. Abbe’s illness dates back about one year. At that time he submitted to an operation in the Fort Dodge hospital, which was apparently successful. About two months ago, he began to fail again. On January 27 he underwent a second operation from which he failed to rally. He passed away Saturday morning at 5:40 o’clock, having attained the age of 82 years, 4 months and 8 days. He leaves to mourn, his widow, one son, John Abbe, and a daughter, Mrs. Harry Miller, both of Grant Township, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also two brothers, William of Mokena, Ill., and Chris of Blue Island, Ill, and a number of other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran church with Rev. E. C. Zschoche officiating. Burial was made in the Grant Lutheran cemetery, under the direction of Moore Brothers. Pall bearers were Theodore Abbe, Ray Bruhn, Ben Korner, Henry Jepsen, Hilbert Stockfleth and Robert Laubengayer.
