Death of an Old Soldier
Meikie [Michael] T. Baldwin died at the Harvey hotel Wednesday morning, April 21 of old age. If he had lived until June he would have been 70 years old. If he had lived until June he would have been 79 years old. Mr. Baldwin came to this country about the year 1872 and for a number of years resided on a farm between here and Harlan, which city he afterwards made his home for some time. About five years ago his wife was stricken blind, and being in somewhat straightened financial circumstances, the unfortunate wife lived with relatives while Mr. Baldwin, being an honorable soldier of the late war, went to the Soldiers’ home. He received a pension and was permitted to visit Mrs. Baldwin quite often. Of late years Mrs. Baldwin has made her home with her sister, Mrs. John Brown, Mr. Baldwin visiting her here frequently and since last August has made this his permanent home. Mr. Baldwin has been quite feeble for some time but has received the best of care from the members of the G. A. R. post and other friends. He was only confined to his bed a few days when death knocked at his door and the old patriot peacefully passed away. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss. He has one daughter living near Audubon, another in Nebraska City and a son in Kansas. The funeral services will be held at the hotel this afternoon at two o’clock.
