HERMAN HENRY CARSTENS

Herman Henry Carstens was born July 16, 1908, the son of John and Adelia Schlotfeldt Carstens. He died at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, on Wednesday June 1, 1994 at the age of eighty-five years.

Herman was born on a farm in Hayes Township, near Ida Grove. He was baptized a Christian at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township. After completing his education on a rural school near his home, he farmed with his family.

On October 24, 1928, Herman was united in marriage to Mabel Eggers at the home of Rev. William Frese. The couple settled on the home farm south of Ida Grove where Herman was born and raised. They were blessed with the birth of two children.

The couple farmed the home farm until they retired in 1970 and moved in Schleswig. He was then employed by the Morgan Cemetery Association for many years and also worked for several farmers in the Schleswig area.

Herman enjoyed fishing and being with his grandchildren. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

In 1991, Herman moved to the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mabel in 1985, three grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include one son, Leroy and his wife, Cleora of Ida Grove, and one daughter, Darlene Freese also of Ida Grove; nine grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; one sister. Hilda Eggers of Denison; two sisters-in-law,Amanda Carstens of Galva, and Viola Carstens of Battle Creek. Other survivors include nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
