April 20, 1927 - Humboldt Republican - Ellen Jane Boyle, oldest daughter of Michael and Margaret Sheridan Boyle, was born near Cascade, Iowa, on the 28th of September, 1860. In 1864 the family moved to Davenport, Iowa, and resided there until the death of Mr Boyle which occurred on the 17th of September, 1873. The mother with her family of six children, four boys and two girls, moved to Rutland, Iowa, in 1878 where the children grew to manhood and womanhood and usefulness.

Ellen Jane Boyle was united in marriage with Daniel A. DeGroote on the 17th of March, 1883. They lived in Rutland where Mr. DeGroote kept a store for several years, later moving to Humboldt where Mr. DeGroote continued the same vocation. Ellen with her late sister and cousin and other young friends were baptised in Rutland by the Rev. R. Persons in the year 1883. She was a faithful helper in the church.

When the family moved to Humboldt her gentle disposition won the esteem of the entire community. She was a member of the Rebekah lodge and the Congregational ladies aid society and other organizations. She was a faithful wife, a devoted mother, and had love and tenderness for her mother and brother and sister.

Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. DeGroote. Two died in infancy. The remaining three are Oliver H. of Humboldt, Grace of Humboldt, and Mrs. Inez Cathay of California. She was a long and patient sufferer.
