Nov 6, 1929 - Humboldt Republican - The body of Daniel A. DeGroote was found in his residence in Humboldt Thursday noon of last week, October 31, where he .had doubtless passed away from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr D DeGroote was last seen Tuesday evening when he had visited the business section of town. He had ridden home with Cap Klein that evening, and seemed in excellent health. It is known that he had planned for a fishing trip for Wednesday, for he had secured bait. It was his custom to fish frequently at this season of the year.
When he did not appear about his home (where he lived alone) Wednesday, no thought was given it because he was supposed to have left the house early on the fishing trip. However, when he did not return or appear about the premises Thursday morning, Mrs. Oliver DeGroote went to the house and tried to enter. The door was locked.
She reported the matter to her husband, who is the son of the deceased, and he with the assistance of Dr. Sproule forced an entry to the home. The stair door also was locked and had to be opened. Also the door leading to Mr. DeGroote's room was locked and this also was forced.
Mr. DeGroote was in his bed with the covers pulled well about his shoulders and neck, because the window was open and the open air made the room chilly. There was no sign of a struggle and he had not suffered to any great extent. After an inspection of the body Dr. Sproule who is the coroner, decided that it was not necessary to hold an inquest. Mr. DeGroote had lived in his
home alone since the departure of his daughter Grace who is teaching in the public schools at Cedar Rapids. His wife had died some years ago, The funeral was held Monday from the Congregational church, Rev. Thomas Lutman in charge. Burial was made in Union cemetery.
