6-29-1923Capt. T. A. Rossing Passes Away
Captain Torkild A. Rossing was born in Norway, April 7, 1830. He came to America in 1857 and settled in Wisconsin. On Oct. 4 , 1861 he enlisted in the Union armies and when Co. E of the famous 15th Wisconsin volunteers was organized he was made sergeant and later a sergeant major. On Sept. 3, 1862 he was commissioned as first lieutenant and on April 7, he was made a captain.
His major campaigns during the war were the operations against Island No. 10, the campaign and
battle of Chickamaugua, the battle of Chattanooga and the siege of Atlanta. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 20, 1864.After his discharge he was for a time engaged in business at Monroe and Argyle,Wis., and in 1869
moved to Bode, Iowa. He became prominent there as a farmer, merchant, and banker. In 19l3 he
moved to Decorah to give his son Torstein, an opportunity to attend Luther college. He has resided here[Decorah] since that time.He was married on May 30, 1864, to Maria Anderson. She died on Aug. 15th, 1916. He is survived by an only son, Torstein Harold.
Capt. Rossing was a loyal member of the Norwegian Lutheran church and evidenced his interest in the work of the church by frequent bequests. His largest bequest made in 1911 was in the form of a fund of $10,000 given to Luther college for aiding students who intend to study theology.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. I . B. Torrison at the home in West Decorah this, morning at 10 o'clock, The body was taken to Bode today for interment . - Decorah Public Opinion.
