Obituary.
John Wittman was born Aug. 8, 1841 in Sehoenwelde, Germany, and passedaway Tuesday, Feb. 6, 1917. On June 21, 1858, Mr. Wittman came to America and settled in Illinois, in LaSalle county. In 1864 he enlisted in Company H, 156th regiment of Illinois and served until the close of the war. On March 4, 1868, Mr. Wittman and Albertina Brandenberger were united in marriage.
To this union were born twelve children, of whom seven are still living, and with one exception were present at the funeral.

In 1892 Mr. Wittman with his family moved to Humboldt county Iowa, where for nearly a score of years he lived on his farm in Weaver township. In 1913 he moved to Humboldt where he has since lived with his dauivhter, Mrs. Frank Dodd.

Mr. Wittman was a man of modest and quiet demeanor, kindly disposition and sterling character. Devoted to his home, neighborly in his relations to the community, conscientious in his dealings, he was loved by those most intimate with him and respected and honored by all who knew him. He was an honorable citizen, a brave soldier, a loving husband and father and friend.

Mr. Wittman was a member of the Lutheran church, but during his residence in Weaver township he attended the Congregational church near his home, and after coining to Humboldt, when his health would permit, he attended the Congregational church at this place. He had long been in failing health. Patient in suffering, his dying words were: "The Lord's will be done." So, let
us believe, he passed into the "Father's house of many mansions," whither his faithful wife and some of his children had preceded him. Peace be to his ashes and honor to his memory.

Funeral services were conducted in the Baptist church by Rev. H. D. Herr, assisted by Rev. Robinson, a large audience assembling- from the city and surrounding country, thus giving expression to the high esteem in which the deceased was held by
those who know him.

Mr. Wittman being a veteran of the civil war, G. A. R. funeral ceremonies were conducted by representatives of the local post. Interment was made in Humboldt Union Cemetery.
