DEATH OF RUFUS WHITTIER.
Mr. Whittier passed away May the seventh at the L. J. Strait home where he was cared for the past four weeks. While his death was sudden it was not unlooked for. He was a patient sufferer, never complaining and always grateful for any kindness shown him.

His wife arrived from Worcester, Mass., Saturday noon. Funeral services were held at half past two at M. E. church, Rev Blackstock officiating. Burial was at Union cemetery. The old soldiers attended in a body.

In April, 1877, Mr. and Mrs. Whittier came to Humboldt when there was no Methodist Society. In 1878, Mr. Whittier was one of twelve, to form the first Methodist, society which met for worship in the Humboldt public school. From the school house the society went to Harkness Hall. Mr. Whittier was then one of the pioneers and at that time besides other labors was the leader of the singing.
