John Wurtele was born in Wartenberg, Germany, May 4, 1843. When 12 years of age he came with his parents to America. He was married to Mary Snell, in Pennsylvania August 31, 1863. Mr. and Mrs. Wurtele moved to Iowa in 1882 and located on a farm five miles west of Humboldt where the family of seven children grew to maturity. Three have passed to the great beyond. The surviving children are: Mrs. Adam Eisler of Dakota City, Mrs. May Weible of Gilmore City, Will Wurtele and Mrs. David Heidt of Humboldt at whose home he spent his last years and where he passed away July 16, 1925 at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 12 days. His wife died April 8, 1915. Besides his children he leaves two sisters, one brother, nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. The deceased enlisted at Davenport in Co. K of the 44th Iowa infantry and served in the civil War and was honorably discharged at the expiration of his enlistment. He was converted many years ago and joined the german Evangelical association church of which he remained a consitent member until he was called to the church triumphant.Funeral services conducted by the Rev. W. E. Ross, were held at the home, where he died and his body was laid to rest in Union Cemetery.
