P.F.C. Gearld Hewitt enlisted in the Marines in July 1941. He received his basic training at Camp Elliot in CA. In January 1942 he was sent to the Pacific War area, where he saw service at Guadalcanal and Tarawa. He was wounded at Guadalcanal.
During his career he was awarded several medals and citations, among them the Purple Heart. It is believed that Geralds death occurred during the attack at Saipan.
Memorial services were held in August of 1942. In 1949 at the request of the family, his remains were returned to the United States for permanent internment. Military rites were held on May 15,1949 with internment at the Union Cemetery, Livermore, IA. He was 19 years old. Gerald was the son of Hiram and Clarice Hewitt of Livermore.
