OBITUARY
HARDY
Elmer Lyle, youngest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hardy, was born at Cresco, Iowa, May 29, 1889 and there he resided until at the age of eighteen he went to Dakota and made his home for about two years with his brother, V. C. Hardy, on his homestead.
Returning from Dakota the two brothers enlisted in the United States navy, Elmer serving for four years on the “New Hampshire” and receiving an honorable discharge, with highest credits, on Dec. 16, 1912.
Very shortly after this he came to Riceville and began work in the Schultheis garage, later going into the same business for himself, which he conducted successfully and skillfully up to the time of his last brief illness.
On Oct. 25, 1916. He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Burke of this place, with whom he lived in happy companionship for but two brief years when his life work was suddenly terminated after about ten days illness with influenza followed by pneumonia complications.
Loved ones, doctors and nurses did all in human power for his restoration to health, but he passed to his reward on Thursday, Dec. 19, 1918.
Besides the bereaved wife, he is survived by his father, Thomas Hardy, of Cresco one brother and two sisters, Verne Hardy and Mrs. Grace Jensen of Cresco and Mrs. A. W. River of Riceville.
With these nearest relatives who mourn, is mingled the sorrow of many friends—for no one ever spoke ill of Elmer Hardy. He was a man who made and deserved friendship. In his home, in his work, among his associates, he was always the same cheery, helpful, interested friend; not a person of many words, but one who spoke good rather than evil of his fellow men. Such a life is never lost.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father J. J. O’Brien on Saturday morning, who spoke very appropriately at the grave, and he was tenderly laid to rest in Calvary cemetery.Transcriber's Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.
