Death of J. W. Helmer.
The West Union Argo chronicles the death of J. W. Helmer, a former Cresco resident, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. O. Perry, near North Yakimo{sic}, Wash., Dec. 9th, after an illness of several weeks. The Argo says:
“Mr. Helmer was a veteran of the Civil war, enlisting after his marriage and serving in the 32nd Wisconsin Infantry. He and his family came to Fayette county about forty-five years ago. They lived for some years near Fayette, then for many years were in or near West Union. He and his son Elbert ran a grocery store in this city for nine years, and for twenty years were on the well known Helmer farm just south of town. He and Mrs. Helmer left West Union seven years ago, going to be with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. M. O. Perry. Mrs. Helmer died about a year ago. Mr. Helmer was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. He was a man kind and upright in every relation, commending the esteem of the many people with whom he had dealing du{r}ing his long residence in this community, and his passing is keenly regretted by all.”
