OBITUARY.
Nichols.
Lydia Hazzard was born in Burns, Alleghaney county, N. Y., Dec. 11, 1833. When a very small child she moved with her parents to Ogle county, ill., where she spent her young girlhood. In early life she was married to John Ryder. To them one son was born, Lewis Ryder, who now lives in LeGande, Ore.
In 1857 she was married to Wm. C. Nichols of Grande Detour, Ill. In 1857 Mr. and Mrs. Nichols determined to cast their fortune in the then unknown west, and so they organized a little company of friends and started overland in covered wagons and ox teams for Pike’s Peak. When they reached Iowa City they were persuaded to turn north and finally reached Howard county where Mr. Nichols’ parents and brother James already resided. They passed through many severe hardships in the early days, but worked together courageously and came out victorious.
To this union four children were born—Charles D. Nichols of Cresco, the late Mrs. Wm. A. Stockman of Albion township, Holt Nichols of Rupert, Idaho, and Howard Nichols of Cresco.
Mrs. Nichols had not been in the best of health for the past year, but her indomitable will and energy kept her up till three days before her death.
She spent Thanksgiving day with her son Charles and family and was up quite late Saturday evening; but Sunday morning she was unable to rise or even speak to any of her family and late Monday afternoon, Dec. 3rd, passed away.
She leaves to mourn, her three sons, one sister, and one brother, Daniel Hazzard of Leaf River, Illinois, who was here to attend the funeral, twenty-one grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Congregational church, conducted by Rev. W. A. Bockoven, who spoke very highly of her life and character.Burial was at Oaklawn cemetery.
