LaVone L. Maland, age 93, of Cresco, IA, died on June 3, 2024 at Accura Healthcare of Cresco.

LaVone Louise Burnikel was born on December 19, 1930, daughter of Leonard and Madelyn (DeGroote) Burnikel in Cresco, Iowa. She graduated from Cresco High School. On January 30, 1961, LaVone married Donald O. Maland in Nisswa, MN. Together the couple built up Dr. Don Maland’s medical practice. LaVone worked in the office and moved around filling different positions at the office. Throughout the years they gained more doctors and nurses. LaVone loved being a doctor’s nurse and always said she “never worked a day in her life, because she loved caring for people.”

For several years Dr. Don and LaVone wintered in Florida, and enjoyed traveling to Mexico and Canada. LaVone loved to fish and cook for the moose hunters while in Canada. She was known by family and friends to make the best cookies in the world. LaVone took great pride in her lawn. She was oftentimes seen picking up sticks and feeding the birds and squirrels in her yard. LaVone loved all animals especially, her cat and dogs. She kept her hands busy knitting, crocheting, and with various crafts.

LaVone had a servant’s heart. She was nominated and won Cresco’s “Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award”, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and served the church as sacristan and on a funeral luncheon committee.

She is survived by her siblings Wayne (Sharon) Burnikel of Cresco, IA, Darlene (Harold) McGuire of St. Charles, MN, Bev (Dave) Fishbaugher of Altoona, WI, and Don (Pam) Burnikel of Lime Springs, IA; many nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.

LaVone is preceded in death by her parents, husband Dr. Don Maland on March 1, 2000, and 2 brothers George Burnikel and infant Ronald Burnikel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 8, at Notre Dame Catholic Church with Father Jacob Rouse officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Cresco, IA. Visitation will be held 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 8, at Notre Dame Catholic Church; with Recitation of the Rosary held at 9:45 a.m. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home is assisting the family.
