William Howard was born at Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, England, April 20, 1847, and died at his home in Cresco, Iowa, December 11, 1915. Mr.
Howard grew to manhood in his native land, and on November 11, 1868, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Walton, also of Long Sutton, and for 19 years they labored together amid the old surroundings. At last the fever of emigration fastened upon him, and with his wife and family he set sail for the land of promise—America, and arrived in Cresco, May 2, 1887. He took up farm life and only retired from that activity some six years ago when he came to Cresco to live. Mr. Howard was a member of the Baptist church in England, but has never identified himself with any church in this country.
Seven children were born into the home, two of whom died in infancy. Those living are, W. W., Mrs. Lizzie Eddy, Mrs. Anna Barker, all of Cresco; Fred of Correll, Minn., and J. W. of Postville, Iowa. In addition to the children mentioned, he leaves a faithful and loving wife, 16 grand children and one great grand child, and a large number of loving friends to mourn his departure. Mr. Howard has never been sick during his life, his wife never having known him to be sick in bed before his last sickness. His heart was in bad condition and he slipped away very quietly in the early morning.
The funeral was held from the home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Will Kirwin, pastor of the Methodist church, and interment was made in Oaklawn cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone shows his year of death as 1916.
