OBITUARY.
RIDLINGTON.
Joseph Ridlington was born in Cowbrit, Lincolnshire county, England, Oct. 10, 1824. His father dying when he was five years of age, he lived with his widowed mother until he grew to young manhood. On the 4th day of July, 1849, he was united in marriage to Mary Tucker. In the month of April, 1851, they sailed for America and settled in Ohio, on what was known as the “Western Reserve." About three years subsequently they moved with tide of emigration westward, and made their home in Davenport, Iowa, for about three years. It was while here that his life work was opened before him and made plain by the spirit of God.
Brother Ridlington was converted at about the age of twenty, before coming to the United States, he was at once appointed class leader and granted a local preacher’s license. During two years, while residing in Davenport, he was in charge of the work under the presiding elder. He joined the Upper Iowa conference in 1856, the first session in its history, the conference session being presided over by Bishop James. He was ordained elder in 1858 by Bishop Morris.
He served the following charges: Maquoketa circuit, DeWitt, Vinton, Waterloo, Camanche, Bellevue, Lansing, Cresco, Floyd and New Hampton. He also served temporarily as pastor of the Congregational church at New Hampton. While at New Hampton his health became impaired and on that account, retired from the active work of the ministry, after a continuous service of over twenty years.
During all these years of his pastorate his faithful wife proved herself an efficient and sympathetic helper. For about thirty-five years their home has been in Cresco. His final illness was brief and painless. Prostrated on Thursday, Nov. 17th, the final summons came about 1:30 p. tn., Sunday, Nov. 20. The end was peaceful and his faith calm to the last. He leaves his wife and one nephew, James Ridlington of Dell Rapids, S. D.
Funeral services conducted by his pastor, Rev. Gammons, assisted by Rev. Maxwell of Lime Springs, were held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. Interment was in Oaklawn.Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone shows he was born in 1825.
