Charles P. Lent was born November 15, 1856, in Hyde Park, Dutchess County, N. Y., where his early boyhood was spent.
In 1868 with his parents, Alpheus D. and Helen M. Lent, he came to Iowa, the family settling on a farm in the western part of Howard County. The next year the family moved to Cresco, where he has resided ever since with the exception of a few years at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Great Falls, Mont, Forest City, Davenport and Ft. After leaving school he worked with his father at the carpenter trade for a number of years, and then entered the abstract office of J. G. Peck during his terms of office. He was also city clerk for several years, resigning to take a position with an abstract company at Davenport. He also worked at his trade in Cresco for a number of years. When the Cresco Fire Department was organized he joined the hook and ladder company and was one of its charter members.
Last July he went to Aberdeen, S. D., to work as building superintendent for Vance & Eaton.

Sudden Death of Charles Lent.
A telegram last Friday afternoon from Aberdeen, S. D., announcing the death of Charles P. Lent came as a complete surprise to his family and friends in Cresco. A letter received by his son Fred Friday morning and probably written Wednesday stated that he was suffering from a bad cold and was very weak but did not hint that his condition was serious. Acting under instructions from the family the body was prepared for shipment and reached Cresco Monday afternoon and the funeral was he’d the following morning.
The family had no definite information as to the nature of his illness till yesterday when Fred Lent received a letter from H. A. Conrad, proprietor of the hotel where deceased was stopping, and we make the following extracts from it:
“Your father complained of being sick since Monday, Jan. 31st. He worked until Saturday night, Jan. 29, but he was up and about, either sitting here in the office or he was around town.
Two hours before he died he walked about a block from here to a drug store. He died about 11:30 in the forenoon of Feb. 4th. He went to the telephone and tried to call up somebody, when he fell over and he was dead in about five or six minutes. I called up Mr. Wilson, the undertaker, and he came right away and took the body.
“I went to the undertaker’s hall last Saturday night. I found about 200 men assembled there. The Rev. Mr. Dent preached a very nice funeral sermon. The body was taken to the depot in a hearse and about 200 union men walked in double file to the depot.”
