TAFT.
Mary Elizabeth Richards was born April 30th, 1847 in Portland, Maine, where she resided, until with her parents she moved to Howard county, Ia., in the early pioneer days.
On July 4th, 1862, she was married to Albert Jefferson Taft. Four children came to bless this union, all of whom survive their parents, their father having died March 16th, 1875: Mrs. Geo. Fifield of Minneapolis, Minn., Frank J. Taft, Mrs. John Elliott of Monticello, Minn., and Alvin J. Taft of Cresco, Iowa.
On Jan. 3rd, 1877, Mrs. Taft was again married to Lewis G. Reed of Howard county, Iowa. One son, Fred W. Reed of Athol, So. Dak., being born of this union.
Since moving west Mrs. Taft has always made her home in Howard county, Iowa, until the fall of 1908, when she moved to Monticello, Minn., to make her home with her daughter Mrs. Elliott.
A great many years ago Mrs. Taft acknowledged her Saviour and has since lived a conscientious, Christian life. Her social, cheerful and kind disposition with always a consideration for others, endeared her to all her friends.
Last of Oct. 1908, Mrs. Taft underwent an operation at the Cresco hospital from which her friends hoped for a complete recovery, but a complications of troubles resulted in the dread disease cancer which caused her death. Everything that could be done to relieve her was of no avail and she quietly and peacefully passed away June 10th, 1909, at Monticello, Minn.
Funeral services conducted by Rev. Gammons were held at the M. E. Church Saturday afternoon. A large company of friends and relatives accompanied the remains to Oak Lawn for interment.

Mrs. Mary Taft, formerly of Albion, who for several months has been a great sufferer from that dread disease, cancer, pased{sp} away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Elliott, of Monticello, Minn., June 10th. Her remains were brought to Cresco, where the the{sic} funeral services were conducted by Rev. Gammons, from the M. E. church Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment in Oak Lawn. Mrs. Taft leaves a host of friends who extend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.
