OBITUARY.
O’BRIEN.
Seldom has deeper or more general sorrow been felt in this community than was occasioned by the announcement Tuesday morning of the sudden death of Mrs. Alice O’Brien.
Mrs. O’Brien has been in poor health for some years, but during the past year her health had improved so much that her family felt quite encouraged. She appeared unusually well and happy all day Monday. She spent the day fixing her plants ready to be set into flower beds as soon as it stopped raining; she sewed some and retired about 9:30 p. m. The girls visited with her until 11 p. m. About one hour later she was taken suddenly ill and went almost instantly into a faint from which she passed peacefully away.
Deceased was born in Ireland and came to this country when 8 years of age. She was of a family of seven children, of whom, one brother, James McDermott of Elkader, survives her. She lived with her parents on a farm near Elkader, Ia., until her marriage there, Oct. 22, 1860, to Patrick O’Brien of McGregor. They made their home in McGregor until coming to Cresco about 18 years ago. She was the mother of 8 children, four of whom Julia, a religieues{?} Ella, Mary and John with her husband have preceded her to the other world; the other four, Mrs. Alice Miller, Will, Kate and Stella, also a grandson, remain to mourn the loss of a dearly loved and tenderly devoted mother.
Mrs. O’Brien was of a happy and unselfish disposition. Charitable to a fault, this noble woman always thought first of the comforts of others. Her whole life was a tender devotion to her family. She looked, not only to the welfare of her own household, but her home was a most hospitable one, always freely shared with others.
The funeral services were held at the Church of the Assumption, Thursday morning. A Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father McCarty. The funeral was attended by a large number of neighbors and friends of the family. Interment was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Among the relatives who were able to attend were: Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McDermott and daughter Kathryn, of Elkader, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. P. H. O’Brien, of McGregor, Ia., Will O’Brien, of Ogden, Utah. Dan and Alice Ivory and Calista Mahr, of Strawberry Point, la., Fred McDermott, of Luverne, Minn., Kate McLaughlin, of Parker, S. D., Patrick Ryan, of St. Paul, Minn., Harry Ryan, of Spring Valley, Minn., and Miss Margaret Lynch, of New Hampton, Iowa.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in Calvary Cresco Cemetery shows she was born May 9, 1841 and died June 8, 1909
