John Crawford was born in Belfast, Ireland, in the year 1830, and came with his father to Canada in 1837, from there he came to Iowa in 1851 and settled in Winneshiek County where he has always made his home with the exception of about 6 years that he spent in Howard County. He was married in 1852 to Matilda Dean who died Aug. 18, 1902. To this union, 9 children were born, five having “passed on” before him. He was again married on Jan. 11, 1905, to Sophia M. Stace, of St. Paul, who survives him. June 4, 1909, he died at Cresco, Ia., aged 78 years 7 months and 2 days, of a complication of diseases from which he was a great sufferer, bearing it with great patience and resignation.
The funeral was held from the home conducted by the Rev. Hinman of the Congregational church whose beautiful and consoling words will long be remembered. He leaves besides his wife, three daughters and one son: Mrs. G. W. Daniels, of Ossian, Mrs. P. E. Puller, of Clear Lake, Frank, of Cresco, Iowa, and Mrs. R. W. McCloud, of Granger, Minn., also an aged sister, Mrs. Husted, of Decorah, Iowa, three half sisters, Mrs, P. H. Lawler, of St. Paul, Mrs. A. M. Cummings, of Sulphur, Dakota, and Mrs. Clark Wells, of Texas, and eight grandchildren. He was laid to rest in Oak Lawn Cemetery beside the wife of his earlier years. May he rest in peace.
