John William Spriggs was born in England Nov. 8, 1840.
When he was four years of age he came to America with his parents. They settled in Racine county, Wis., where he lived till 1870. In that year he married Emma Jane Crane of Union Grove. Wis. In March, 1870, they came to Iowa and lived on a farm in Bluffton twp. until five years ago.
To this union nine children were born. Those now living are William of Esmond, S. D., Fred of Maddock, N. D., Walter of North Yakima, Wash., Mrs. Mae Peck of Ridgeway, Iowa, Grace and Leo Decorah.
When they left the farm they came to Decorah where they resided until his death on May 27, 1909.
He volunteered in the first year of the war in Co. Y, 22nd Wisconsin Infantry. He enlisted Aug. 7th, 1862, and was discharged July 4th, 1865.
Services conducted by Rev. Gammons were held at the home in Decorah last Tuesday. The remains accompanied by members of the G. A. R. of Decorah were brought to Cresco for interment.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Oak Lawn Cemetery shows the year of his birth as 1841.
