Jacob Malek was born on a farm in County Tebor near Selch, Bohemia, on the 10th day of August, 1853. In the same year, his parents with their family sought the shores of the new world and settled in Winneshiek County, Iowa. The early years of his life were spent in careful preparation for his future work, and he became interested in exerting his powers by tilling the soil. October 6, 1886, when but a prideful young man, he was united in marriage to Antionette Knechlova, and the same year went to Chickasaw County, Iowa, to continue the work of providing for himself and family and strengthening those chains that bind all men to their creator. In the year 1892, he came to Howard County and lived on his farm near Schley, Iowa, until the 14th of May, 1909, when God called him to depart from us and pass to that eternal home to which he longed to go.
Six children honored this matrimonial knot which has remained tied during so many years, four girls and two boys, one of whom died in infancy, while the rest, Emma, Lewis, Annie, Francis, a wife, two brothers, three sisters and an army of friends are left to sob for this worthy, departed brother. One brother, Lawrence, preceded him in death, April 27, 1909.
If we were to go to the humble little cottage in which he was born, then follow him from day to day, now being on the shattered bark that carried him to our eastern coast, then see him before the altar of God when the matrimonial knot tied his youthful man¬hood, now walking behind him as he contented himself with his mission in this world, then standing at his bedside as that message came down from Heaven that called him away from us, we could not fail to be impressed with the fact that a dear father, a beloved husband, a Heavenly worker, and an honest neighbor and friend has left us never to return again.
The funeral services were held, May 17, 1909, at the Holy Trinity church in Protivin, conducted by Rev. Father Lakomy and the remains were laid to rest by the side of his brother in the adjoining cemetery.
