Last Monday morning John and Thomas Walsh Jr., left Cresco for Minneapolis, and from there intended to go to Montana. They separated in Minneapolis, John visiting some acquaintances in the city.
Tuesday afternoon Thomas was found dead by the police and the body was identified by means of a card bearing the name and address of his sister Nettie. He had evidently been hit in the back of the head and killed and then robbed, for his overcoat and money were missing when the body was found.
The Minneapolis Journal has this to say of the affair:
“Mystery surrounds the Walsh death. His body was found in a sluice of the Pillsbury-Washburn mill. Sixth avenue S and First street, yesterday afternoon. Antonette Walsh, 19 years old, 3149 Bloomington avenue, a sister of the dead man, told the coroner that her brother had visited her Monday afternoon. She said he intended leaving Minneapolis Monday night for Montana. Coroner Seashore will interrogate relatives to-day. As the result of the postmortem examination, Coroner Seashore says death was due to injuries suffered in a fall into the sluice.”
The remains were brought to Cresco Wednesday night and the funeral takes place this morning from the Church of the Assumption.Source: Twice-A-Week Plain Dealer May 4, 1909, FP, C6,7
