S. M. Cole passed away yesterday morning, the 19th, after a long illness. The funeral takes place at the residence this afternoon. We will give an obituary of this deceased pioneer in next issue.

COLE.
Samuel Matthew Cole was born in Pen Yan, New York, April 17, 1815; and died in Cresco, Iowa, August 19, 1907. He was the eldest son of Smith and Elizabeth Cole. He had one brother Calvin, and one sister, Harriet; both of whom have passed to the Beyond.
On the 31st of December, 1834, he was united in marriage with Miss Susan Crawford, of Pen Yan, New York, who died in February, 1883. They lived for a short time in Pen Yan, and a short time in Warren county, Pennsylvania; and about 1838 moved to Illinois, locating at Napirville, and in 1854 they came to Iowa, settling on a farm in New Oregon township. Nine children were born to them, four sons and five daughters. One son and one daughter died in infancy; one daughter Linnie, died in 1901, and one son, Charles M., died in 1905, The other five, Mrs. J. C. Kellow, Mrs. H. C. Band, Miss Susie Cole, Mr. Ezra M. Cole and Mr. Lewis M. Cole survive, and were present at the funeral.
The funeral occurred Tuesday, Aug. 20th, at the late home, conducted by Rev. Gammons. Interment was in New Oregon cemetery.
