GIFFORD.
John King Gifford was born in Rancil county, New York, Nov. 10, 1836, and died at his late home in Vernon Springs, July 21, 1907, at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 11 days With his parents, he moved to Racine, Wisconsin and from there to Fayette county, Iowa, where he was long married to Martha {illegible because of fold in paper} raised a family of nine children. August 14, 1862, he enlisted in Co. A, 38th Iowa volunteers, and was discharged because of disability, Dec. 4th of that year. He moved to this county in the spring of 1881, where his wife died a few years later. His second wife, nee Martha Cushing, died eight years ago. April 7, 1801,{probably should have been 1901} he was married to Mrs. Flora Mitchell, and she, with six of his children survive him.
The funeral was in the Vernon Springs school house, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Gammons. Interment was in New Oregon cemetery.
