Obituary of Karl Reckner.
Another aged pilgrim and one of the earliest settlers of Howard county has finished his course of life, and is now, we hope, enjoying his well deserved rest. Indeed the sad news that Grandpa Reckner was dead came wholly unexpected, as he had not been ill at all.
Mr. Karl August Reckner was born January 23, 1827, in Koesoelitz, Province Pommern, in Germany. He stayed with his parents until his 16th year when he hired out for several years. After serving in the army he was married to Miss Marie Louise Bielefield, August 1, 1852, and about two years later the young couple left for America arriving in this country in May, 1855. Two brothers of Mr. Reckner were at that time living in Howard County, and this perhaps was the reason why brother Karl and his wife also became residents of Howard County at a time when this part of our country represented the “wild west.” Indians were nnumerous{sic} and game was plentiful along the rivers and in the woods. Mr. Reckner settled permanently and was a resident of Howard County for nearly 45 years.Their union was blessed with nine children, five sons and four daughters, of whom one son died at the age of four months, their oldest son Karl F. A., in 1855, at 32 years of age, and their youngest daughter, Marie L. M., in 1892 at 22 years. The latter was married to Theo. Vick of Alta Vista
The six children who now mourn the loss of a beloved father are: Christ. M. J. Reckner, of Howard county; Christian Reckner, of Norcross, Minn.; Anna Marie Konst, of Alta Vista; Emilie Louise Krieger, of Howard county; Louise Jones, of Lodi, California and Ephram W. Reckner, of Howard Co.
About seven years ago Mr. Reckner and his wife retired from farming and came to Alta Vista, where they enjoyed the same blessing of good health, of a peaceful happy home, of sound confidence in their God and a contented disposition, which was granted them during the hardships of their life. Although the aged gentleman seemed to grow some weaker for the last few weeks, he was able to be up part of the day of his death. He passed away Saturday evening, June 29th, at 7:15, at an age of 80 years, 6 months and 5 days. Besides his beloved wife and six children, he leaves to mourn 46 grand children and great grand children.
The funeral services were held Tuesday, July 2d, at the Lutheran church, of which he was a member and the remains were laid to rest in the family graveyard near his old homestead in Howard county.—Elma New Era.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Reckner Cemetery shows the spelling of his first name as Carl.
