Obituary.
FOBES.
Benjamin Franklin Fobes was born of Puritan parents in Goram, Ontario county, New York, Aug. 5, 1828, and lived there until 7 years of age, when his father moved to Oakfield (now Carryville) Genesee county, New York, and lived there until he came west in 1856. He settled on a farm in Winneshiek county about 7 miles east of Cresco, Iowa. Lived there about 2 years when he moved one mile east of New Oregon and lived there until 1873, then came to Cresco and has since resided here. Passed away March 9, 1907, after an illness of about 7 weeks.
He was united in marriage to Susan Mahana Oct. 24, 1853 in Oakfield, New York. Nine children were born to this union. Orpha Gates, Hetty Eliza, Cora, Mary, Frank, Emma, Susan, Mabel, Benjamin. Susan and Mabel died when young aged 6 and 4 years, Feb. 8th, 1876. Only one brother survives him, G. M. Fobes of Cherokee, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at the family residence Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. J. H. Hinman, and burial was in Oaklawn cemetery.
Mr. Fobes was among the early settlers of this section. Like many others he gave up the comforts of an eastern home to take part in the pioneer struggles. This generation cannot be too forcibly reminded of the great debt we owe the pioneers.
Deceased was a generous man, always willing to divide with a friend in need, and he will be long remembered by those who were the recipients of his bounty.
