OBITUARY.
Lynn Donald Taubman died at 2 o’clock, a.m., on the 5th day of July, at the St. Mary’s hospital in Duluth Minn., resulting from a fatal injury received at Willow River, Minn., while celebrating the Fourth.
He was born two and one half miles east of Saratoga in Howard County, Iowa, on the 6th day of July, 1887, residing there with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Taubman, until he was twelve years of age, when Mr. Taubman, with his family moved to Cresco.
Lynn, after pursuing the course of study in the public schools of the city, about a year ago went to Willow River, Minn., remaining there until his injury.
On the morning of the Fourth, at the home of Edward Walters about two miles from Willow River, Lynn chose to celebrate the Fourth by entertaining and amusing Mr. Walters’ children at home rather than go to Willow River where a general celebration was held. Lynn played with the children, amused them, and assisted them in shooting their fire crackers and fire works from early in the morning until about ten, a. m., when an old fashioned single barrelled shot gun was discovered, which was immediateately{sic}brought into service to assist in the furtherance of noise, smoke and amusement of the little boys. The old gun was loaded with powder and sand, fuse attached, lighted, the boys stepped back a few feet and waited for the discharge. This was repeated until eventually too heavy a charge was placed in the old gun and upon the discharge the old rusty barrel bursted, flying in every direction, a portion of which struck and penetrated Lynn’s left temple, rendering him instantly unconscious, after which he never regained consciousness.
Physicians from Brainard and Willow River were immediately summoned and he was taken at once to the St. Mary’s Hospital at Duluth, Minn., where the aid and assistance of the most skilled surgeons and nurses were secured but of no avail, and Lynn quietly passed away at 2 o’clock on the morning of July 5th.
As soon as the sad news of Lynn’s injury was borne by wire to Cresco, Mr. and Mrs. Taubman hurriedly proceeded to Duluth, returning to Cresco at 9:30 the evening of July 7th with the remains.
Lynn Taubman leaves to mourn his loss, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Taubman, of Cresco, Ia.; one brother, Homer Taubman, of Willow River, Minn.; and one sister, Mrs. Arthur Wessels, of Clinton, Ia., and many friends.
Lynn was a kind, considerate and affectionate son; he loved small children and was loved by them in return; be admired and respected old age; he always had a cheering word and a pleasant smile for all; he possessed those sterling qualities of honesty, integrity, uprighteousness and straightforwardness, characteristic of good citizenship.
The funeral services were held at the residence Saturday afternoon, July 8th, at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. John Gammons, after which the remains were taken to the Oak Lawn Cemetery for burial.
