Another Old Settler Dies.
James Irvin, of Riceville, was born February 8, 1836, in the county of Dublin, Ireland, and died at his home near Riceville, Ia., June 28, 1904, making his age at the time of his death, 68 years and nearly 5 months:
The deceased came to America In the year 1852 and lived in Pennsylvania some six years. In April, 1858, he came to Afton, Iowa, and settled on the farm that continued to be his home until death. It was but a few months ago that serious symptoms of heart disease were manifest. He was usually about the house, only occasionly{sic} taking to his bed for a few days at a time. On Tuesday, June 28th, be rose early as he was wont and seemed more active than for some time. He laid down before noon and dropped to sleep as he had often done, but this time he failed to wake.
Mr. Irvin was reared in the Presbyterian church and confirmed before he came to America. His mother for whom he bought the Iowa home died in October, 1873, having received the love and devotion of the son to the end. On January 4, 1876, he was married to Miss Lizzie Lane, of Jamestown, Ia.; to them five children were born: James, Mrs. Minnie McCook, Lizzie, Arthur and Nettie. All have been spared and were privileged to be with the father most of the time to the last.
Mr. Irvin was a man long and most favorably known throughout Howard county. He held the position of County Supervisor for several terms and was very faithful and efficient in that position. He was a man of many excellent traits of character; the poor and needy always found in him a true friend. He refused to sell feed in times of scarcity to men able to pay for it and at a high price, but he let it go on credit to those unable to pay down. He also gave where richer men withheld, and many of these acts of kindness have been remembered and a list of friends will rise to bless his name.
The funeral sermon was preached by the pastor in the Riceville Congregational church on Friday, July 1, 1904, and the busy season did not prevent the friends from attending his funeral in large numbers.
