SUDDEN DEATH.
A Old Resident of Howard Center, Thomas Greller, Passes Away.
Our community was greatly shocked Saturday morning, April 16th, by hearing that Thomas Greller was found dead in his bed. He being feeble of late, employed Wm. Hanneman to look after him during the winter. Wm. Hanneman went over on this morning to chop some for Mr. Greller, arriving there he rapped on the cabin door the same as usual, Mr Greller wanted to know “Who is there” and Mr. Hanneman said “Its me." “Oh, is that you, Will” the old man replied. Mean while Mr. Hanneman had tried the door and found it locked. Thinking that Mr. Greller had not got up yet, Mr. Hanneman went to the wood pile and chopped wood. He said it was then about 8 o’clock, but when he had chopped about one hour and Mr. Greller did not put in his appearance he again rapped on the door, but this time got no answer and repeated with the same results. Mr. Hanneman then tried the door and still found it locked. He then began to feel uneasy and summoned several of the neighbors and they broke open the door and found Mr. Greller asleep in death. Coroner Carpenter was summoned and he empaneled a jury consisting of Wm. Stopperan, Sam Dinger and Loyd Lathrop and held a post mortem examination and pronounced it old age. He lived to a good, ripe old age of four score years and four.
He was born in England and came to America when 24 years of age, and had lived on the farm on which he died for 40 years. He was a good, honest and upright citizen and was liked by all who knew him and will be missed by his fellow men. As far as known he leaves one brother and three sisters in England.
The funeral service was held in the Howard Center school house, April 17th, at 2:30 p. m., by Rev. Evans, of Lime Springs, Ia, and his remains were laid to rest in the Howard Center cemetery which was followed by a large number of old friends and neighbors.
