OBITUARY.
The death of Nicholas Lydon, one of Howard county’s pioneer’s, occurred at the home of his son, Martin P. Lydon, near this city, Monday, July 6th. Mr. Lydon was born in Galway county, Ireland, 80 years ago, where he grew to manhood. He always retained for his native land a love second only to his loyalty and affection for the land of his adoption. He came to the United States in 1947, landing at Norfolk, Va., and in 1855 joined the sturdy pioneers for the West, locating in Chickasaw county, and moving to Paris twp., Howard county, the following year, where he lived on his farm continuously for 36 years. In 1892 he moved to New Hampton, from which place, in 1897 he moved to Howard county, since which time he has made his home with his son, Martin P., near this city Industrious, frugal and temperate, he lived for others rather than for himself, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to the needy. All his acts being free from selfishness, indicating the spirit of “good will to all men.” He died as he lived, a devout and practical member of the Catholic church, a truly christian gentleman, conceding to every man the liberty to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience.
In 1851 at Boston, Mass., he married Mary Foley, who for more than fifty years shared his life, its trials and its pleasures, encouraging by her love and loyalty his every effort, and sharing with him in the fullest measure the respect and confidence of all.
To this union were born eight children all of whom, except one daughter, with their mother, survive him: Bridget, of McCook. Neb; Michael and Thos. P of Minneapolis: John F. of Davenport, Ia.; Mary, of St Paul; Martin P. of Cresco and James M., of Lead, S. D, Bridget and James were unable to arrive before his death. All the other children together with his nephew, John Foley, of New Hampton, were at his bedside when he died. The remains were taken to Lourdes Thursday following his death where appropriate funeral services were held and the remains were laid to rest near the home where he had lived and labored and among the friends he loved.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery indicates he was born in 1822.
