OBITUARY.
POWELL.
Sarah Vance, the subject of this sketch, was born April 21, 1822, at Paris, Ind. When she was 18 years of age she united with the Presbyterian church. Was married to William H. Powell, at Paris, Ind., Aug. 16, 1843. In 1855 they moved to Howard county, Iowa, settling in New Oregon. In 1866 she, together with her husband, united with the M. E. church, when the church was first organized at New Oregon. Later they moved to Cresco, where they have since resided. She died March 5, 1903, aged 80 years, 11 months and 12 days. Deceased was the mother of 8 children, 5 of whom, together with her husband, survive to mourn the death of a good, loving, christain{sic} wife and mother.
The surviving children are Mrs. J. C. Bartholomew of Rail-prairie Minn., Mrs. Geo. Oathout of Luana, Ia., and Georgia Ann, John and Sue S Powell, all of Cresco.
Miss Maggie Vance, sister of the deceased, whose home is with the family; two grandchildren, Miss Delia Bartholomew and M. Leula Oathout; a son-in-law, Geo. Oathout, of Luana; were present at the funeral, which was held at the house, Saturday, conducted by her pastor, Rev. John Gammons.
A quartette from the church choir were present, and many of the dearest friends, several of whom were her intimate friends of early days.
The burial was at the New Oregon cemetery, where are burried three of the children, who went on before Mattie Powell Young, Henrietta and Thomas Powell.
Among the friends present from a distance we note Mrs. Nell Courtney of Chester and Mrs. Belle Moore of Lime Springs.
The friends wish to empathisze{sic} their gratitude to all who so kindly came to their assistance in their time of trouble, not forgetting the beautiful music, the profusion of flowers, and especially the choice floral offering of the Junior League.
A good christain{sic} wife and mother has gone home, to be forever with loved ones, where it is hoped all the{line is illegible} may meet in a happy reunion in the “sweet bye and bye.”
