John Gerber was born February 14, 1826 at Hurdoff, Kanton Bern, Switzerland. Soon after birth the child was baptized after the custom of the protestant church. From his 16th year he went to school in Stattlen, Kanton Bern, where his parents had removed. He was also instructed in religion and christian life and then confirmed in 1842. After confirmation he helped his father in farm work. In the month of March 1854, he married Magdalena Kach, his mourning widow. This marriage was blessed with 11 children, 8 of whom are surviving to mourn the loss of their beloved father. Two died before him, and one son was never heard of since the terrible cyclone over St. Louis, He and another of his sons, John had emigrated to America before the parents, who followed in 1883 with the rest of the children. They settled in Howard county, 6-1/2 miles southeast of Cresco. By God’s help and hard work they built up a nice home and farm where they had a better living than in the old country. The deceased was always in strong health and never knew much of any sickness. But Friday, Aug. 15, he was overtaken by an attack of dizziness and had to lay in bed. All had good hopes of a speedy recovery, even on the night of his death but he himself felt as if the end was near and prayed for a speedy relief from all sufferings. His prayer was answered, death coming suddenly Thursday morning at 2:45 the 24th day of August. He brought his life to 76 years 6 months and 7 days. His widow, 8 children and 40 grandchildren mourn the loss of the beloved father and grandfather, who was always kind to them, who was also honored and esteemed by all his friends and neighbors. As a christian man John Gerber had joined the German Evangical Lutheran congregation at Cresco, Ia. The funeral was held Saturday Aug. 23, by Rev. C. Neidermeier, his pastor. Interment being at New Oregon cemetery. May he rest in peace.
