Obituary.
Sophia A. Loomis was born in Hastings, Oswego county, New York, May 21, 1822, one of a family of twelve children, four of whom survive her, A. J. Loomis of Cicero, N. Y., H. H. Loomis, Mrs. F. Freeman and Miss H. A Loomis of Syracuse, N. Y. When 16 years of age she united with the Disciples church, to which faith she has always adhered. She was married to J. M. Field at Cicero, N. Y., December 28, 1842. They came to Vernon Springs in 1855, which place has since been her home. Four daughters were born to them, Mrs. Ella Tebbetts of Blaine, Kansas, Mrs. Alice Gallup, Mrs. Cora Mulholland and Mrs. Ida Reynolds of Cresco, all of whom are now living c=excepting the daughter Cora.
Two of the daughters were with and tenderly cared for the dear mother during the long weeks of suffering, the other being kept at home by illness in her family. Her husband entered the higher life five years ago, she joining him on August 18, 1902.
Service were held at the home on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Marshall and Ridlington officiating. The interment was in beautiful Oak Lawn.
A devoted mother, kind neighbor and true friend has gone.
Mrs. Field was among the very first settlers in Howard county, and through all the intervening years has resided upon the farm where she first made her home in the county, and where the final spark of life went out. She was a woman of rare qualities of head and heart, an inspiration for good wherever she was present and wherever known was loved and respected.
