A Centenarian Passes Away-
As was mentioned briefly in our last issue John Dargan Sr., died at his home east of Riceville, Wednesday, April 4, 1900, at the advanced age of 100 years and 8 months. Up to the Saturday prior to his death he was in his usual good health. From that time he gradually failed and passed peacefully away at noon on the above date —simply fell asleep not to awaken until the Resurrection. The funeral was held at the Catholic church in this city Friday morning, at 8 o’clock, Rev. Father O’Brien officiating. Burial was made at Cresco where other relatives are interred.
John Dargan Sr., the subject of this brief sketch, was born August 17, 1799, in County Longford, Ireland. Came to America in February 1847, settling in New York, where he lived until 1853 when he moved with his family to Wisconsin where he resided until 1869, when he came to Iowa and settled in Howard county where he has since lived. His wife died several years ago. Of the ten children which were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dargan only two are living, John Dargan Jr., of this place, and Mrs. Bridget Condon of Garfield, Washington. John Dargan Sr., coming to Iowa during its early history found Howard county but little settled with most of the land uncultivated .His long residence in the county has gained him a wide acquaintance. He was a man of quiet disposition, honest and upright, and a good law-abiding citizen.—Riceville Recorder.

Transcriber's Note: Find-A-Grave shows he is buried in Calvary Cresco Cemetery.
